Stephen Nill is an attorney admitted to practice in California in 1981. He is a member of the State Bar of California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States District Court, Central.

Experienced Counsel

Stephen C. Nill, Attorney at LawIn his three decades of law practice he has advised hundreds of nonprofit organizations, including many large public and private colleges and universities, hospital chains, and medium-sized organizations. In his planned giving work, he has been legal counsel to some of the 100 wealthiest families in the United States, and has advised planned giving offices of nonprofit institutions and organizations.

Mr. Nill has conducted continuing education classes for lawyers on advanced topics in  tax-exempt organization law, estate planning and taxation (including gift planning),and Internet law, for such organizations as the State Bar of California, the Western Conference on Tax Exempt Organizations, CEB, and others.e received his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School of Los Angeles (1981), and his Bachelor of Arts degree in two majors, Communications and Political Science, from California State University, Fullerton (1978). He was selected as Executive Editor of the Daily Titan, the university's daily broadsheet newspaper.

Founder of CharityChannel

Mr. Nill founded CharityChannel in 1992.  Today it is the oldest and largest community of nonprofit -sector professionals in the world, comprised of well over 150,000 participants worldwide. In 2010 he founded CharityChannel Press, which publishes titles on all aspects of nonprofit fund raising, governance, career, and more.

Three Decades of Leadership in the Nonprofit Sector

He has been working in the US and international third sectors for more than 30 years. Over the past three decades, he has been a keynote or plenary speaker at most of the third-sector's professional organization international, national and regional conferences. Mr. Nill is a frequent media source on nonprofit-organization issues, appearing on numerous broadcast news programs such as Fox News and CNN. He has been quoted in numerous print publications such as Fortune Magazine, London Times, New York Times, Chronicle of Philanthropy, Chronicle of Higher Education, Nonprofit Times, etc.

Mr. Nill formerly served on the board of the Giving USA Foundation (also known as the AAFRC Trust for Philanthropy), which publishes the annual Giving USA report. He is a member of the advisory board of the National Philanthropic Trust. Mr. Nill believes strongly in supporting nonprofit professionals; in 2005 he received the President's Award of the Grant Professionals Association, and in 2010 he received the President's Aware of Grant Professionals Certification Institute.
Our Approach
As a leading California exempt-organizations law firm for three decades, we have learned how important it is to get to know our clients.  Looking back, the most successful relationships have been those where we have been counsel to the organization for years, enabling us to be there for them on an on-going basis and to get to know their board members and executives, their organizational culture, and their legal needs. That enables us to focus on "routine" legal needs so that they don't become big, expensive problems later.

Our approach is opposite the typical approach, where legal counsel is sought only when a need crops up, or worse, when something goes seriously wrong.  In fact, the whole idea is to help you avoid legal potholes that can require considerably more organizational resources to resolve.  Over time, our approach will save the organization resources by reducing legal fees and also the costs associated with poorly-managed risk.

Once we're engaged as your counsel, we'll encourage your organization or institution to institute a standing monthly telephone appointment to speak with us. This is our opportunity to go over those things that are on your mind, and for us to ask questions that you might not have thought about.

Of course, we're also here as needed between those standing appointments.  In fact, the whole point is that we're available and responsive to your organization's needs.  You'll pick up the phone and call us when we're needed.  Maybe you'll log in to this web site access your private and encrypted client area, where you can upload documents, download documents I've drafted or reviewed, write notes for us, and so on.
